BUFF - Mary Jane's Not A Virgin Anymore // I Was a Teenage Serial Killer - 30th Anniversary
Sarah Jacobson's fiercely independent debut about sleeping with your cinema co-workers is the Clerks you wish you'd grown up with. Screening with her defiant Valerie Solanas riff!
The sole feature film by Sarah Jacobson—immortalised as the “Queen of Underground Cinema"—Mary Jane's Not a Virgin Anymore is a vibrant and vital antidote to every phony Hollywood teen picture. Praised by John Waters and Roger Ebert upon its release, the film brings a lo-fi realness to the coming-of-age genre, mostly taking place in a repertory movie theater. First job, first time, crushes, friendships, fitting in and figuring it out—all are handled with utter honesty.
The feature will be accompanied by Jacobson's 25-minute short I Was a Teenage Serial Killer. Like Slacker meets Valerie Solanas, the film depicts a 19-year old woman who responds to catcalls, condescension and bad sex in the only way she knows how—murder.
"pure joy encapsulated" Ivy Wolk Letterboxd
"Adolescence can be hell, but these films remind us that there is still hope for everyone coming of age in a scary, sexist, cynical world—we can survive." Katie Duggan Film Daze
